    T-Mobile Is Stretching Its Device Commitment to 3 Years with New Installment and ‘2.0’ Phone Plans

    In an environment in which everything costs more, the major wireless phone carriers have introduced plans to draw in customers who want to reduce what millions of people see as an essential expense. In recent months, AT&T introduced its modular Build-A-Plan, and Verizon cut prices and then rolled out its Simplicity plan.

    Now it’s T-Mobile’s turn.

    Starting Thursday, the company is adding a new installment plan for phone purchases, rebranding its slate of unlimited wireless plans and offering student plans with the option to add 5G home internet service.

    An extended phone flex

    Currently, when you purchase a new phone through T-Mobile, you can buy it outright or pay a monthly installment over 24 months. The new Equipment Installment Plan Flex 36 option lets you make those payments over 36 months, reducing the monthly amount.

    What makes EIP Flex 36 different from the company’s EIP Standard plan (which remains an option as EIP Standard 36) is that all upfront costs are rolled into those three years of payments — the device, taxes and fees — making the initial cost zero. Even with most zero percent finance plans, customers must pay taxes on the cost of the phone and pay an activation fee.

    T-Mobile’s press release says the EIP Flex 36 option for “well-qualified customers” has, “for a limited time, 0% APR.” It’s not clear if that means interest will go up sometime during the life of the installment plan; when I reached out to a T-Mobile representative for clarification, they reiterated the reduced monthly payments but did not define the timeline of when interest might kick in.

    Going forward, the financing options for new customers will be to choose a 36-month EIP plan or pay the full cost of the device. If you want to pay off a phone earlier than the full term, that’s an option, too.

    ‘2.0’”’ unlimited plans (that feel more like 1.1)

    In software, a full-number version increment implies an update that’s bigger than small tweaks; it’s why your iPhone was recently updated to iOS 26.6, applying fixes and security updates, while iOS 27.0 was just released in beta, with major new features — such as Siri AI — and is expected in September.

    Along with EIP Flex 36, T-Mobile is updating its unlimited postpaid mobile plans to 2.0 versions: Experience Beyond 2.0, Experience More 2.0 and Essentials 2.0. (The company did not specifically call out the budget Essentials Saver plan, but I’m told that it will also get the 2.0 treatment.)

    However, the 2.0 in this case appears to be a formality to pair with the EIP Flex 36 and EIP Standard 36 installment plans: The features and base pricing remain the same as the Experience Beyond, Experience More and Essentials plans.

    T-Mobile says that customers already on those plans can stay where they are, or switch to the 2.0 versions if they want to take advantage of the 36-month financing option.

    Student Perks plans

    Now that it’s August, with the academic year about to begin, college-bound kids (and their parents) are likely figuring out what they need to pack for school — and that includes mobile phone plans. For those who want their mobile independence, T-Mobile has launched Student Perks discounts that can cost as little as $30 a month (for the Essentials Saver plan with AutoPay enabled). A limit of two students can be on the account.

    And for those living off-campus in need of fast internet for all-night writing sessions, T-Mobile is offering a Student Perks bundle of 5G Home Internet for $30 a month. The deal also includes up to $200 back in virtual prepaid card credit when signing up for the service.
