DuckDuckGo is courting schools after Google tied search to AI. Will privacy-focused search engines finally break tech monopolies in edtech?

DuckDuckGo is swooping in to rescue school districts frustrated by Google’s aggressive push to force artificial intelligence into public education.

The privacy-first search engine started actively courting K-12 administrators this week, positioning itself as a clean, reliable alternative. The move directly exploits widespread backlash over Google’s recent policy shift.

Google sparked outrage by giving schools a rigid ultimatum: keep AI Overviews turned on, or lose access to basic Google Search entirely. Tech executives claim the AI features are too deeply integrated to unbundle.

DuckDuckGo CEO Gabriel Weinberg openly rejects that explanation, calling out the technical excuse and inviting schools to switch default search settings instead.

Google’s strong-arm tactic exposes the dangerous downside of software monopolies in education.

Forcing AI summaries- with hallucinated facts onto young students? The fear is real. This could strip away their ability to learn critical research skills. Schools’ request for simple administrative toggles to turn off AI seems like a reasonable ask.

DuckDuckGo recognized this gap and proposed a sensible solution: educators will have total control over whether students see AI-generated content or traditional web pages. The search engine offers a refreshing, distraction-free option that puts privacy and genuine learning above corporate AI quotas.

This feud signals a much-needed turning point for edtech.

For the plea to stick, school districts should start by stopping mega-corporations from treating classrooms as captive beta-testers for unproven AI tech.
