Shift is offering to clean homes for free, but there is one important condition. The company will record those chores to build training data for future home robots. The New York-based startup is currently offering free cleaning services, in which a vetted operator visits a home and wears a camera-equipped device while performing routine household work. The footage can then help AI systems understand how people clean homes outside controlled lab settings. Your messy home is valuable AI training data AI companies have already used text, images, and videos from the internet to train software models. But robots need a…

The average person works 80,000 hours over the course of their career. Ideally, that time should be fulfilling, well-paid, and spent doing things that make the world a better place.Of course that’s much, much easier said than done. In an increasingly fragile job market made still more fraught by AI, there’s no longer such a thing as a safe bet.According to Benjamin Todd, most people lack a systematic approach to thinking about their career choice. Todd is the co-founder and president of 80,000 Hours, a nonprofit dedicated to helping people move into careers focused on tackling the “world’s most pressing…

The only Father’s Day gift I can recall my own dad getting was a plate of fried sardines. It was prepared by my mother, his ex-wife, who knew how gratefully he’d receive a dish he grew up with in the Italian neighborhood of a steel town dying with such theatrical flair that Bruce Springsteen named a song after it. (An acoustic Springsteen song, at that.) We lived in a nearby city that had plenty of red-sauce restaurants, but they weren’t serving tinned fish in those days. As my father had only the most limited of food preparation skills and didn’t…

Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed details of a vulnerability in OpenAI ChatGPT that leverages the artificial intelligence (AI) assistant’s implicit trust in Markdown links and images to trigger prompt injections and open the door to phishing attacks. The technique has been codenamed ChatGPhish by Permiso Security. “The chatgpt.com response renderer trusts Markdown links and Markdown image URLs that originated from a third-party page the assistant has just summarized. It auto-fetches those images and surfaces those links as live, clickable elements inside the trusted assistant UI,” security researcher Andi Ahmeti said in a report shared with The Hacker News. In a hypothetical…

The reboot of the classic Xbox series is now coming out in February 2027. Fable, a reboot of the Xbox fantasy RPG series developed by Playground Games, has been delayed. The game’s release date is shifting from fall 2026 to February 2027 “so it can have the dedicated moment it deserves,” according to a post from Xbox on X. The new release date will give developers more time to polish the game before it comes out, while also moving it out of the blast radius of Grand Theft Auto VI, which is scheduled for release on November 19. This isn’t…

A rocket built by Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin Enterprises LP exploded late Thursday ahead of a planned launch next week. The New Glenn heavy-lift vehicle was set to carry 48 of Amazon.com Inc.’s Leo satellites into low-Earth orbit. The retail and cloud giant is building an internet constellation designed to provide connectivity in remote areas. The satellites weren’t on the rocket at the time of the accident. The explosion occurred during a static test, an exercise in which engineers activate a rocket’s engines at full thrust to check that they work. Ars Technica cited sources as saying that the explosion…

It’s tech developer conference season. Hot on the heels of Google I/O and just ahead of Apple’s WWDC, here comes Microsoft’s developer conference, Build. Like virtually all of these events for the past few years, we expect the Windows-maker to focus a lot on AI.  An AI focus is essentially required from a tech company these days, and Microsoft knows that. But what exactly is in store at this year’s conference? We have a few guesses, and some of the session speakers say a lot about how AI is being viewed over at Microsoft right now.  On Monday, CEO Satya Nadella…

Microsoft is giving Copilot a cleaner design and faster responses while trying to make workplace AI feel less frustrating. Microsoft is redesigning Copilot again, and honestly, that’s a move in the right direction. Not because they’re packing it with some groundbreaking new feature, but because they seem to have finally realized that the biggest hurdle for workplace AI is friction. People don’t always enjoy using it, and that’s a massive problem for adoption. The original pitch for Copilot was too good to be true: let AI handle the heavy lifting. Draft the emails, summarize the hour-long meetings, dig through the…
