Amazon Blocks Meta’s Muse From Its Platform

Amazon just drew a firm line in the sand against Meta’s ambitious new AI assistant, Muse.

Meta built Muse to run digital errands for you, including browsing storefronts and making purchases on your behalf. But if you send Muse to Amazon.com, you hit a brick wall. Amazon blocked the bot outright, serving users a stark pop-up warning that unauthorized AI agents violate its terms of service.

Amazon’s official grievance boils down to trust and transparency. The retail giant claims Meta never asked for permission, fails to identify Muse as a bot, and risks exposing customer login credentials. Meta quickly fired back, insisting that Muse operates inside secure virtual environments and never sees passwords.

Security debates aside, this standoff is really about power and revenue.

When an AI agent shops for you, you stop scrolling through Amazon’s digital storefront. You skip past sponsored search listings, ignore recommended products, and avoid impulse buys. The agent finds the item and checks out. That dynamic threatens Amazon’s lucrative advertising engine and cuts off its direct connection with shoppers.

Amazon raises a fair point about platform security. Retailers need clear visibility into who, or what, is accessing customer accounts and hitting their servers.

At the same time, Amazon’s rapid lockdown reveals a deep anxiety over the future of e-commerce. Meta tried to turn web browsing into a hands-off task, and Amazon slammed the gate shut. The war over who controls the AI shopping experience has officially begun, and retail giants will not surrender their turf easily.
