The Americans were closing in, the situation was getting more dangerous by the minute — and President Xi Jinping was waiting for my recommendation. The standoff began in May, when the US announced a package of anti-aircraft and anti-ship missiles to Taiwan that would significantly upgrade the island’s ability to repel a Chinese invasion. We ordered massive military exercises in the region as a show of force. The US soon responded by sending the USS Abraham Lincoln to lead its own exercises with a joint contingent of Australian and Japanese forces. If we showed weakness, Taiwan might be lost to China forever.…
On April 30, the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing’s Social and Ethical Responsibilities of Computing (SERC) initiative hosted a full-day research symposium examining how artificial intelligence is shaping the world and its implications for society. The symposium included research talks by SERC’s latest seed grant recipients on topics such as air pollution forecasting and responsible computer vision deployment, panels on AI alignment and AI in education, and a keynote address by Jon Kleinberg PhD ’96, the Tisch University Professor of Computer Science and Information Science at Cornell University. The event also featured a poster session, where student researchers showcased projects they worked on throughout the year as SERC Scholars.“There is…
TSMC says it still can’t keep up with AI chip demand. And that highlights a reality the industry would rather not talk about: AI’s biggest bottleneck may turn out to be manufacturing. The AI industry has conditioned us to think software moves faster than everything else since at least the last two years. Every week brings something new- a model, benchmark, agent, or capability. It feels like AI is accelerating at an impossible pace if you look from the outside. Then TSMC reminds everyone that the physical world still exists. The world’s largest chipmaker says it continues to struggle to…
It’s raining blood, hallelujah. Shift Up Among a slew of announcements at Summer Games Fest 2026, Shift Up revealed the sequel to its breakout hit, Stellar Blade. The sequel, which we now know is called Stellar Blade: Blood Rain, is said to be in the same universe as the first game in the series. Shift Up says it will take that world in a “bold new direction.” Blood Rain will also feature a new protagonist named Evie, a clear homage to Eve from the original title. The original Stellar Blade was generally well received, earning an…

Research firm Omdia has released a new study on OLED adoption in laptops, and buried inside it are some very specific details about Apple‘s next MacBook. What screen sizes will the MacBook Ultra come in? According to the report, Samsung Display will begin supplying OLED panels for Apple’s new MacBook series as early as July 2026, with the devices expected to launch in Q3 2026. That almost certainly means…
Multiple software supply chain attacks have hit the npm ecosystem, with threat actors using both malicious and poisoned versions of over 50 legitimate packages to distribute a Rust-based information stealer and a self-spreading worm, respectively. According to JFrog, the information stealer “scrapes every secret it can find on a developer’s machine, hides behind an eBPF kernel rootkit, and answers to its operator over Tor.” The stealer also uses the stolen credentials as a propagation mechanism, drawing similarities to the infamous Shai-Hulud worm. The new malware has been codenamed IronWorm by the software supply chain security company. By publishing itself to…
At Microsoft Build 2026, the company outlined a comprehensive vision for enterprise AI built around a tightly integrated stack of models, data systems, and agent infrastructure designed to continuously improve through real-world use. The company’s latest announcements span new in-house models, enterprise context layers, developer tooling, governance systems, and domain-specific collaborations, collectively framing AI not as a set of standalone tools but as a unified operating system for organizational intelligence. At the center of this strategy is a new family of Microsoft AI (MAI) models covering reasoning, coding, vision, speech, and transcription. This family is headlined by MAI-Thinking-1, a 35-billion…
Ahead of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 release rumored to be happening this summer, Samsung announced new feature updates to its Samsung Health App, which will start rolling out on June 8. The Samsung Health App will have new biometric capabilities that use AI to make it easier to understand complex biometric data and offer guidance on how to use this information.”Samsung Health is evolving to connect health data measured by Galaxy Watch with AI-based insights, enabling users to understand their physical and mental condition more easily and intuitively,” Hon Pak, senior vice president and head of the digital health team for…
There are dozens of LED hair growth gadgets on the market, ranging from a $50 product on AliExpress that’s been ’shopped onto a model to comically bad effect, to the $2,500 Capillus Spectrum, which boasts an aggressive array of laser diodes. Contrary to what I would have suspected, women are actually the current dominant consumer group for LED hair regrowth therapy. As it was explained to me, women are accustomed to spending money on their appearance, and thinning hair is often experienced as a crisis. Men, on the other hand, tend to take the path I did and buzz it…
Cybercriminals are probing a quiet layer of fuel infrastructure: the systems that monitor what is inside storage tanks. According to a new government advisory, reports have emerged of threat actors targeting Automatic Tank Gauge (ATG) systems used to monitor fuel and liquid storage tanks across the US. Officials say these actors have already compromised internet-facing devices in recent months, raising concerns about the security of these often-overlooked industrial systems. The warning points to a growing trend across the threat landscape. Instead of focusing exclusively on digital data theft or enterprise networks, attackers are also probing technologies closer to physical operations,…
