It’s difficult to know exactly what is happening in Iran since the government shut down the internet on January 8, plunging a nation of more than 90 million people into digital darkness.Crackdowns against anti-government protesters have led to at least 2,600 deaths, although some estimates put the death toll at upward of 20,000. According to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, more than 18,000 protesters have been arrested. The protests began in late December in response to dire economic conditions and took on a broader anti-government character as people demanded the end of Ali Khamenei’s rule. The Iranian rial is…
Lead generation for cloud software isn’t broken. But the way you’re probably doing it? Yeah, that’s a mess. Every vendor chases the same buyers with the same playbooks. LinkedIn messages that could’ve been written by anyone. Cold emails where “just following up” is the only hook. Demo requests that die in someone’s calendar. Then there’s the buying committee—8 to 11 people who all need convincing. The CTO wants technical depth, the CFO wants numbers, the CISO wants security guarantees. You’re not selling to a person. You’re selling to a bureaucracy that moves at the speed of molasses. The cloud software…
Podcast: Play in new window | DownloadSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | I’ve had a lot of conversations about AI over the past couple years—some insightful, some overhyped, and a few that left me questioning whether we’re even talking about the same technology. But every now and then, I get the opportunity to sit down with someone who not only understands the technology but also sees its broader implications with clarity and honesty. This episode of the TechSpective Podcast is one of those moments. Jeetu Patel, President and Chief Product Officer at Cisco, joins me for an unscripted, unfiltered conversation that covers…

As frustrating as it is that governments and businesses are running roughshod over our online freedoms, at least we have plenty of good VPNs to choose from to keep us protected online. There are so many fast, intelligently designed, full-featured and affordable services on the market that the biggest problem is picking one. For any use case, you can bet at least two providers will be neck-and-neck for first place. On the other hand, the VPN world is still the Wild West in some ways. It’s easy enough to slap a cheap VPN together that the market is flooded with low-quality…
Apple has changed trade-in rates for older iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches. While this is the first revision in 2026, it is the third since the iPhone 17 broke cover in September 2025. Exchange values for most of the products have taken a hit, especially the newer ones, while older models appear to be aging much better. In September 2025, the company offered up to $700 for an iPhone 16 Pro Max, but the maximum trade-in value dropped to $670 in November. Now, exchanging the handset would get you up to $650 (down 7% in a little over four…
The U.K. is not going to let this one go. Even as other inquiries quietly fade into bureaucratic limbo, this one is sticking.A British media watchdog said on Thursday that it would press ahead with an investigation of X over the spread of AI-generated deepfake images — despite the platform’s insistence that it’s cracking down on harmful content. At the center of the dispute are deepfake images – often sexualized; often falsified – that have proliferated on X. The regulator’s fear is far from hypothetical. With these images, a reputation could be ruined in minutes – and, once they’re out there, trying to keep them from being…
I’m in Oslo! Flighty is telling me I’ve flown in or out of here 43 times since a visit in 2014 set me on a new path professionally and, many years later, personally. It’s special here, like a second home that just feels… right. This week, the business end of things is about the WhiteDate data breach. Seeking a partner along common racial lines isn’t unusual, but… well… WhiteDate is anything but usual. And, just for fun, see if you can pick the thing that garnered the most negative feedback about that blog post this week, I’ll feature the discussion…

Leaders at Mira Murati’s Thinking Machines Lab confronted the startup’s cofounder and former CTO, Barret Zoph, over an alleged relationship with another employee last summer, WIRED has learned. That relationship was likely the alleged “misconduct” that has been mentioned in prior reporting, including by WIRED.To protect the privacy of the individuals involved, WIRED is not naming the employee in question. The individual, who worked in a different department than Zoph and was in a leadership role, is no longer at the lab.Murati approached Zoph to discuss the relationship, sources say. The cofounders’ working relationship broke down in the months following that…
