How to Convince Your Boss to Send You to a Conference

It’s not a small request. It can cost thousands, depending on ticket cost and travel.

So don’t just make the case for why you want to attend a conference. Make the business case for why the business should invest in you going.

That extends far beyond the typical professional development ROI story, pivoting around a central business outcome.

Use these steps to make a compelling case that your boss can easily say yes to.

    Start With Business Priorities

Let’s face it: your boss doesn’t necessarily care that you want to attend a conference.

But they do care whether the conference helps solve a business problem.

If you already have an event in mind, work backward to determine how it aligns with current business priorities and objectives.

It could be increasing productivity, reducing costs, adopting AI, or improving efficiency—to name a few for inspiration.

Leverage these core priorities to create the overarching framework for your business case.

The bottom line: Choose a conference that directly connects to a problem your organization is already trying to solve.

For example, if AI adoption is becoming a priority for your organization, a conference dedicated entirely to marketing and business applications of AI may make more sense than a general marketing conference with a single AI track.

Build a Business Case (in Dollars)

Don’t just list the registration fee. Build a complete picture of the investment, including travel, lodging, meals, and time away from work, and then connect that investment to potential business outcomes.

Here’s a sample list of line items to add to your budget.

    • Registration: $
    • Travel/Airfare: $
    • Hotel: $
    • Meals/Incidentals: $
    • Total Cost: $

And here are potential outcomes. Keep in mind that you don’t need to promise ROI; you simply need to showcase how you’ve thought strategically about the value it could create.

    • One workflow that saves five hours every week
    • One tool that eliminates unnecessary software spend
    • One new partnership or client opportunity
    • One strategic initiative that accelerates

And then, of course, there is the professional development aspect. Define why you are the best person to send, highlighting how this experience could transform your role and long-term performance.

The bottom line: Present the conference as an investment rather than an expense.

Answer Your Boss’s Questions Before They Ask

Anticipate objections before they arise, and include them in your pitch if they seem relevant.

    Your boss will probably ask:

Why can’t you learn this online?

Lean into the power of immersion. Online information doesn’t have the same impact as live examples, in-the-moment conversations, and unfiltered feedback on what’s working and what’s not.

Plus, use what we call the “room matters” factor. Point out the importance of the attendee demographic. If you can stand to learn as much from fellow attendees as the speakers themselves, that’s of great value.

Time away from the office, being fully invested in an experience can pay dividends. Big ideas happen with a change of scenery.

What exactly will we get out of this?

Commit to what you plan to bring back.

One of the easiest ways to strengthen your pitch is to promise specific deliverables before you ever leave for the conference.

This could be: a written summary of key sessions, a list of AI workflows to execute, 3-5 recommended tools to evaluate, and a 30-day action plan.

    Why this conference in particular?

Beyond alignment with priorities, make the risk of not going very clear.

For MAICON, if you don’t invest in AI education, you risk inconsistent AI adoption, wasted spend on the wrong tools, slower production cycles, missed opportunities, and so much more.

The bottom line: Managers aren’t necessarily looking for a reason to say no. They just want to know you’ve done your homework and can make a strong case for the investment.

Make the Business Case for MAICON

So what does this look like in practice?

MAICON isn’t just another marketing or another AI conference.

It’s where leaders go to understand what AI is changing right now.

The sessions go beyond ideas and inspiration. They’re designed to help you rethink how you work while giving you practical, actionable use cases you can bring back to your team.

That combination of strategic insight and practical application is what makes MAICON more than a learning experience. It’s an investment in your skills, your team, and your organization’s ability to put AI to work.
